Training & Certification

The National Center for Economic Gardening provides training and certification in Economic Gardening principles and practices twice a year.  These sessions have two tracks:  program administrator and technical staff. The 2 ½ day sessions are intense and content rich.

The entire course consists of three phases:

PHASE ONE: PRE–RETREAT

A pre-retreat review of a series of short videos that cover the original founding ideas and principles of Economic Gardening as well as five longer videos about the frameworks used in the program.  The former videos introduce participants to “complex adaptive systems” that form the sciences underlying the program as well as key economic principles like commoditization as the root of poverty and innovation as the root of wealth.

PHASE TWO: RETREAT

The retreat is intended to show the practical applications of the principles using real company Discovery Calls and case studies.  It is a very hands on and immediate application of the underlying ideas.  Participants will learn how to structure interview information into a disciplined set of frameworks and to get to core issues that are keeping the company from growing.

The topics range from core strategy (commodity or niche), to market dynamics and qualified sales leads (including identifying public signals of volatility) to make higher probability sales calls.  Temperament and innovation are also subject areas.

Participants will be introduced to the powerful and sophisticated tools and principles that have helped Economic Gardening create consistently great results all across the country.  These include:

  • Database searching
  • Demographic, lifestyle and expenditure mapping by neighborhood
  • Digital marketing
  • Listening posts
  • Web scraper and text analyzer
  • Watering hole discovery
  • Exotic databases
  • Influencer blogs and centers of industry excellence
  • Public signals of Volatile Environments
  • Network mapping and Centers of an Industry Universe
  • The backstory of Economic Gardening
  • Outcomes
  • Where and how jobs are created in communities
  • Innovation / commoditization cycle
  • What Economic Gardening is and isn’t
  • Starting and running the program
  • Onboarding the program, onboarding the CEOs
  • Roles of team leaders, order of an engagement, controlling document
